The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has paid glowing homage to the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, hailing him as a fearless democrat and brilliant strategist whose life embodied courage, intellect, and compassion.
Delivering the tribute on behalf of the party at his state funeral on Friday, August 15, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey said Dr. Omane Boamah was “more than a political strategist” — he was a fighter for justice, a leader of uncommon resolve, and a man whose generosity and empathy touched countless lives.
Dr. Boamah was among eight people who perished in the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
The tragedy also claimed the lives of Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; former Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, alongside three Air Force crew members.
Recalling his journey from a fearless student leader and activist to a statesman, the NDC highlighted Dr. Boamah’s role in defending education funding, mobilising youth movements, and safeguarding Ghana’s electoral process.
He later served in several ministerial capacities under Presidents John Evans Atta Mills and John Mahama, including as Deputy Minister for Environment, Minister for Communications, and finally, Minister for Defence until his untimely death.
The party described him as a leader who combined intellect with resilience, vision with action, and passion with humility — a legacy it says will continue to inspire generations.
