Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah, Member of Parliament for Esikado-Kentan Constituency, has appealed to the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to reconsider their ongoing strike action.
Dr. Danquah’s plea comes on the heels of an emergency meeting between GRNMA officials, the Ministry of Health, and other stakeholders on Monday June 9, that failed to produce a breakthrough.
The GRNMA remains firm in its rejection of the government’s proposal to defer the implementation of their revised conditions of service to 2026.
The Association insists its members are being treated unfairly, especially when other public sector unions have had their demands addressed more promptly.
While acknowledging the concerns of the nurses, Dr. Danquah emphasized the need for patience and understanding, given the current economic challenges facing the country.
In an interview on Radio XYZ, Dr. Danquah, a medical doctor by profession, expressed empathy for the nurses’ plight but urged them to consider the broader economic context.
“I understand the frustrations of the GRNMA, but I believe the government is making efforts within its means. Given the economic situation we inherited, this is not the most effective time to push for full implementation of their demands. This is a new administration trying to stabilise things,” she said.
“As a medical doctor myself, I fully appreciate the critical role our nurses play. But I plead with them to reconsider their industrial action, bearing in mind the current state of the economy and the government’s commitment to gradually meet their needs,” she added.
The strike continues to disrupt healthcare delivery nationwide, as negotiations between the GRNMA and government remain at a standstill.
