President John Dramani Mahama says the government is in the final stages of completing the required procedures before compensation is paid to people affected by the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage.
Addressing residents during his Resetting Ghana tour of the Volta Region, the President said the compensation exercise would be carried out in a fair and transparent manner to ensure deserving victims receive support.
He noted that the 2025 Budget has already earmarked GH¢225 million to begin compensating affected households and businesses, adding that more funding will be made available in next year’s budget if the current allocation falls short.
“The necessary verification, assessment and administrative processes relating to compensation are being concluded.”
Mahama stressed that government remains committed to completing the process responsibly before payments begin.
“Once this process is finalised, the Minister of Finance will make an allocation in this year’s budget to start the payment of compensation.”
The 2023 dam spillage displaced thousands of residents and destroyed homes, farms and businesses across several communities in the Volta Region.
