The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, has announced that Ghana has achieved 70 percent Universal Health Coverage (UHC) under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as of the first half of 2026.
Dr. Bampoe attributed the milestone to the dedication and commitment of staff across the Authority, describing the NHIS as one of the most successful health insurance models on the African continent.
He made the announcement during a staff durbar held at the forecourt of the NHIA Head Office in Accra.
Reflecting on the Authority’s progress, Dr. Bampoe noted that NHIS coverage has increased significantly over a relatively short period.
“These are things that people see that connect us to people, and that is why I am so proud that when we came in, our coverage was 56 percent and now I am being told we are hovering around 70 percent. I think we must be proud of ourselves,” he said.
The NHIA Chief Executive credited the achievement to a number of innovative outreach programmes introduced by the Authority, including the Market Storm initiative, Campus Connect, and the Faith and Wellness Drive campaign, which have helped expand coverage, particularly among younger Ghanaians and underserved populations.
Despite the progress, Dr. Bampoe cautioned staff against complacency and urged them to remain focused on further expanding access to healthcare through the NHIS.
“Whilst we should be proud of how far we have come, we shouldn’t be complacent, because our next chapter will demand even greater commitment from us,” he stated.
He encouraged staff to continue embracing innovation and developing smarter systems to improve service delivery and respond effectively to the evolving needs of clients.
According to him, the next phase of the Authority’s transformation agenda will require collaboration, teamwork and a shared commitment to achieving the institution’s objectives.
Dr. Bampoe also urged employees to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, accountability, punctuality and customer service in their daily work.
“Let’s continue to improve on our professionalism, our integrity, our punctuality, our accountability and excellent customer service.
Let these principles define everything that you do,” he said.
He further called on staff to ensure the prudent use of the Authority’s resources, stressing that every savings made through responsible stewardship could be redirected towards improving healthcare services for Ghanaians.
The NHIA says it remains committed to expanding coverage under the National Health Insurance Scheme as part of efforts to achieve universal access to quality and affordable healthcare across the country.
