Motorbike-related accidents claimed more lives than vehicle crashes in the Bono Region in 2025, raising serious safety concerns for road users.
According to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, a total of 133 accidents were recorded in the region last year, with motorbikes involved in 85 cases, surpassing incidents involving commercial and private vehicles.
Chief Superintendent Stephen Tenkorang, Bono Regional Commander of the MTTD, revealed that out of 58 fatalities, 35 were linked to motorbike crashes.
“With respect to death, we recorded 58 deaths. If we break down further, we realised that 35 of the deaths were related to motorbikes. Motorcycle accidents are more serious than the vehicles,” he stated.
He expressed alarm over the persistent disregard for helmet laws, noting that many riders either avoid wearing helmets altogether or hang them on their motorcycles instead of using them properly.
In response to the rising fatalities, the Bono Regional Command of the MTTD announced plans to intensify public education campaigns, strengthen enforcement of road traffic regulations, and prosecute offenders to curb the trend.
Authorities have urged motorbike riders to comply with Section 16 of the Road Traffic Act, 2004 (Act 683), which mandates the use of crash helmets, warning that failure to do so puts their lives and others at risk.
