The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced free National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration for all persons affected by recent flooding in Accra, as health authorities raise concerns over increasing cases of diarrhoea and cholera in impacted communities.
The initiative, announced by NHIA Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, is aimed at ensuring that flood victims and their dependants can access healthcare without financial barriers during the ongoing public health risk.
According to the Authority, the floods have severely disrupted sanitation systems, contaminated water sources, and increased the likelihood of waterborne disease outbreaks, particularly cholera and diarrhoea.
Dr. Bampoe stressed that the intervention is necessary to protect vulnerable populations in affected areas.
“No Ghanaian should be denied access to quality healthcare because of a natural disaster.
With an eminent outbreak of diarrhoea and cholera following the floods, this free registration will ensure that victims and their families can seek timely treatment without financial burden,” he said.
The NHIA says the move forms part of emergency public health measures to support flood-hit communities and strengthen early response to potential disease outbreaks.
