The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) recorded a 29.5 per cent reduction in institutional maternal deaths during the first half of 2026, alongside increases in specialist outpatient attendance, emergency cases and laboratory services.

Institutional maternal deaths declined from 78 between January and June 2025 to 55 over the same period in 2026.

Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, announced the figures on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during the hospital’s 2026 Mid-Year Performance Review Conference.

Specialist outpatient attendance rose to 149,055, surpassing the mid-year target of 139,740 and representing a 3.61 per cent increase compared with the same period last year.

Emergency attendance also increased by 8.66 per cent year-on-year to 14,467, exceeding the target of 12,400.

Laboratory services recorded 174,367 cases, representing 108.71 per cent of the mid-year target and a 26.49 per cent increase over the previous year’s figure.

Primary care services, however, recorded 37,500 cases against a target of 37,900.

Despite the gains, Dr. Baidoo said some areas of service delivery, including deliveries, surgeries, physiotherapy, radiotherapy and certain admission figures, fell below their respective targets.

He said management would use the shortfalls to develop corrective measures as the hospital works to improve performance in the second half of the year.

According to the CEO, the mid-year review was aimed not only at assessing achievements but also at identifying weaknesses and applying lessons from the first six months to improve operations.

He noted that KATH continued to face challenges, including severe congestion at the Accident and Emergency Centre, network difficulties and growing demand for space to establish new specialist service and training centres.

Dr. Baidoo said management remained committed to improving service delivery and ensuring that specialist healthcare at KATH remained accessible, evidence-based and patient-centred.
