The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, says construction of a new Cardiothoracic Centre at the Tamale Teaching Hospital in the Northern Region is progressing steadily.
According to the Minister, the project forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to expand access to specialised healthcare for patients suffering from Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
Mr Ofosu Kwakye said the establishment of the centre would help reduce the need for patients in the northern part of the country to travel long distances to access specialised treatment.
He made the disclosure in a Facebook post on Monday, August 31, 2026, while providing an update on the project.
The Minister said the development of the facility was part of broader efforts to decentralise specialised healthcare services and ensure that patients can access critical care closer to their communities.
He noted that the project was being supported under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund(GMTF), popularly known as Mahama Cares, which has indicated that construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
The completion of the cardiothoracic centre is expected to strengthen the capacity of the Tamale Teaching Hospital to provide specialised cardiac and thoracic services to patients in the northern sector.
The initiative is also expected to reduce pressure on healthcare facilities in southern Ghana and minimise the financial and logistical burden on patients who currently have to travel long distances for specialised care.
He stressed that the government has positioning the expansion of specialised healthcare infrastructure as part of its broader strategy to improve access to quality healthcare and address the growing burden of Non-Communicable Diseases across the country.
