Authorities in Nkawkaw have intensified enforcement at the redevelopment site of the Nkawkaw Central Market, removing traders who were operating at unauthorized locations within the construction area.
The exercise, led by the Nkawkaw Market Taskforce in collaboration with traditional leaders (Nananom), forms part of efforts to ensure the timely completion of the ongoing market reconstruction project.
The redevelopment has seen traders temporarily relocated to the Adom Market to allow construction works to proceed smoothly.
However, some traders have reportedly defied the directive and returned to the old market site and surrounding areas to continue trading.
Authorities say the illegal trading activities are disrupting construction works and slowing down progress on the project.
Traders at Adom Market have also expressed concern, blaming low patronage on the continued presence of vendors at the old site.
During the enforcement operation, the taskforce removed unauthorized traders and confiscated goods belonging to those who failed to comply with the relocation directive.
Officials indicated that all seized items will be donated to the Nkawkaw Senior High School and the SOS Children’s Village Nkwatia.
Speaking after the exercise, the Sanaahene of Nkawkaw, Nana Kofi Onwena, appealed to traders to cooperate with authorities by operating from the designated temporary market at Adom Market.
He stressed that compliance is essential for the successful and timely completion of the project, which is expected to provide a modern market facility for the municipality.
