The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced free National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration for people affected by the recent floods in Accra as health authorities intensify efforts to prevent outbreaks of diarrhoea, cholera and other waterborne diseases.
The intervention follows Monday’s devastating floods, which claimed about 12 lives, displaced hundreds of residents and destroyed homes and property across parts of Greater Accra after hours of torrential rainfall.
In a statement dated Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the Authority said the free registration would cover all persons impacted by the floods, including their dependants, to ensure they have access to healthcare during the emergency.
The Chief Executive of the NHIA, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, said the decision forms part of urgent public health measures to protect residents in flood-hit communities.
According to the Authority, the flooding has disrupted sanitation systems, contaminated water sources and increased the risk of diarrhoea, cholera and other waterborne diseases.
“No Ghanaian should be denied access to quality healthcare because of a natural disaster. With an eminent outbreak of diarrhoea and cholera following the floods, this free registration will ensure that victims and their families can seek timely treatment without financial burden,” Dr. Bampoe stated.
The NHIA said the initiative is intended to remove financial barriers to healthcare for affected families while supporting the country’s response to the growing public health risks in the aftermath of the floods.
The Authority urged flood victims to take advantage of the exercise and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms of diarrhoea, cholera or other waterborne illnesses.
