The High Court has dismissed a submission of no case filed by two accused persons in the matter of The Republic v Solomon Asamoah & Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, clearing the way for the trial to proceed.
Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Justice Sai, announced that the court rejected the argument by the accused that the prosecution had failed to present sufficient evidence to warrant their continued defence.
According to him, the court ruled that the prosecution had established a case requiring the accused persons to respond.
The court has therefore directed Solomon Asamoah and Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi to open their defence and provide reasons why they should not be convicted in relation to an alleged US$2 million financial loss to the state.
Justice Sai expressed appreciation to State Attorneys and investigators from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) for what he described as their sustained efforts over the past months in building the case.
The proceedings are expected to continue as the accused begin their defence in court.
