President John Dramani Mahama has praised engineers of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) for their swift response following a fire outbreak at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Plant’s control room, which temporarily disrupted power generation.
During a visit to the facility, he described the incident as unfortunate but expressed confidence in the technical capacity of the state energy operators to restore stability.
“We heard about the sad event, the fire outbreak in your control room. And of course, Ghanaians have felt the impact of what happened,” he said.
Mahama commended the resilience of staff, noting the institution’s strong human resource base.
“VRA has been one of the best organised state-owned enterprises. So I am not surprised that you have the kind of quality of human resource to ameliorate what happened,” he stated.
He further lauded ongoing restoration efforts after being briefed that four turbines were already back online, with work continuing on the remaining units.
“When I heard that our engineers say they are going to find a way of bringing it back on, I was not surprised because I know VRA has some of the best personnel you can ever get anywhere in the world,” he added.
Mahama assured continued government backing for VRA and GRIDCo as they work to fully restore operations at Akosombo.
