President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency flood relief operations and long-term mitigation measures following the devastating floods that have affected Greater Accra and parts of southern Ghana.
The directive, announced in a statement issued by the Presidency on Tuesday, June 30, comes after hours of torrential rainfall triggered widespread flooding, resulting in loss of lives, destruction of property and the displacement of hundreds of residents.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), at least 12 people have died in the floods, while more than 500 others have been rescued through ongoing emergency operations.
Under the President’s directive, GH¢150 million will be allocated to provide immediate relief to affected persons and communities, while the remaining GH¢150 million will be used to implement flood mitigation measures aimed at reducing the impact of future flooding.
President Mahama has also instructed the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to deploy personnel to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency agencies in ongoing rescue and relief efforts across affected communities.
Earlier on Tuesday, the President conducted an aerial assessment of the flood-hit areas to evaluate the extent of the destruction and announced a series of interventions to protect residents and strengthen the country’s response to flooding.
The floods, which inundated large parts of Greater Accra and several communities in southern Ghana, destroyed homes, businesses and public infrastructure, leaving many families displaced and counting their losses.
Government says the emergency funding and deployment of additional security personnel form part of broader efforts to support affected communities, accelerate rescue operations and implement measures to minimise the risk of future flooding.
