The Ministry of the Interior has suspended, with immediate effect, the operating licence of Kantanka Security Services Limited following allegations involving the unlawful use of firearms, ammunition and unapproved security uniforms during an incident at Kwabenya in Accra that reportedly left former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo injured.
The suspension, announced in a statement signed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak on June 22, 2026, follows preliminary investigations into events that occurred on Sunday, June 21.
According to the Ministry, initial findings suggest possible violations of the Police Service (Private Security Organisations) Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1571), which governs the operations of private security companies in Ghana.
The decision comes amid ongoing investigations into a shooting incident linked to a dispute at the residence of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo. Reports indicate that Adwoa Safo sustained a gunshot wound to her ear during the confrontation and subsequently received medical treatment.
The Ghana Police Service earlier confirmed the arrest of six private security personnel in connection with the incident. Police also reportedly retrieved firearms, ammunition and communication equipment as part of the ongoing investigations.
In its statement, the Interior Ministry cited allegations of the use of unprescribed uniforms as well as the possession and use of firearms and ammunition by personnel of Kantanka Security Services while providing private security services.
“The usage of unprescribed uniforms, unauthorised possession and use of firearms and ammunition as well as security accoutrements by private security personnel constitutes a serious breach with significant implications for public safety and security,” the statement noted.
The Ministry has directed the company to cease all operations pending the conclusion of investigations and advised public institutions and private entities to refrain from conducting business with the firm until further notice.
Kantanka Security Services has also been instructed to cooperate fully with investigators and provide all information necessary to facilitate a thorough probe.
The suspension represents a significant escalation in the government’s response to the incident, which has generated widespread public interest and raised questions about the role of private security personnel in the dispute.
Authorities have stressed that the suspension is an administrative measure aimed at safeguarding public safety while investigations continue. The Ministry has assured the public that further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigations and in accordance with the laws governing private security operations in Ghana.
Meanwhile, several questions surrounding the shooting remain unanswered, including who fired the shot that injured Adwoa Safo, whether the firearms involved were legally authorised, and the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
