The government has announced plans to construct 50,000 housing units for teachers across the country in a move aimed at addressing accommodation challenges within the education sector.
The announcement was made by the Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, on behalf of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu at the 5th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) in Koforidua on July 30th, Thursday.
Dr. Apaak said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve teachers’ welfare and create a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
He acknowledged that Ghana’s education sector continues to face challenges, including teacher shortages, inadequate infrastructure, learner indiscipline, uneven deployment of teachers and funding constraints.
The Deputy Minister also disclosed that government has settled inherited capitation grant arrears and is working to ensure more timely disbursement of funds to schools.
“We have cleared the inherited capitation grant arrears and are working to ensure more regular disbursement. Discussions have also begun on reviewing the grant to align it with current economic realities,” he said.
Meanwhile, the National President of the Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS), Nicholas Nii Kpakpo Addo, welcomed the planned teacher housing project and urged government to also implement its promise of granting teachers duty-free concessions on imported vehicles to improve their welfare.
