The Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has assured headteachers of the government’s commitment to improving conditions in the basic education sector, while appealing for patience as the country works to strengthen its economy.
Speaking at the 5th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) in Koforidua on July 30th, Thursday, she said effective leadership at the school level remains critical to improving learning outcomes and delivering quality education.
Addressing delegates on the theme, “Repositioning Headteachers for Effective School Governance and Improved Learning Outcomes,” the Vice President described headteachers as the backbone of Ghana’s basic education system.
She noted that their responsibilities extend beyond administration to include mentoring teachers, managing school resources and mobilising communities to support education.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged concerns over inadequate infrastructure, delayed responsibility allowances and irregular capitation grant payments, but said government is committed to resolving the challenges.
“We are aware of the challenges you face, and government remains committed to addressing them. We ask for your patience as we work to fix the economy and create the fiscal space needed to meet these obligations,” she said.
She reaffirmed government’s resolve to strengthen support for headteachers as part of efforts to improve teaching and learning across the country.
