Government in collaboration with the Gbeho family, will on Friday, July 31, 2026, hold a state funeral in honour of the late Ambassador James Victor Gbeho in recognition of his distinguished service to Ghana and the international community.
The funeral will take place at the forecourt of the State House, according to a government statement issued on Wednesday, July 29.
Describing the late diplomat as “one of Ghana’s most distinguished statesmen,” the government highlighted Ambassador Gbeho’s decades of service in the country’s diplomatic corps and public administration.
During his career, he rose through the ranks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, serving as Chief Director, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, and later Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Beyond his service to Ghana, Ambassador Gbeho also held prominent international appointments. He served as the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Somalia before becoming President of the ECOWAS Commission, where he played a key role in advancing regional cooperation and diplomacy.
“The Government of Ghana, in collaboration with the Gbeho and related families, shall hold a State Funeral in honor of the stellar national and international service rendered by the late Ambassador James Victor Gbeho,” the statement said.
Government also extended its sympathies to the bereaved family, stating that it offers “its deepest condolences to his family.”
The state funeral is expected to attract senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, traditional leaders and other dignitaries who will gather to pay their final respects to the veteran diplomat.
