Former Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to close ranks and rally behind the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2028 general elections.
In a statement addressed to party members on Thursday, June 19, 2026, Dr. Acheampong reflected on the aftermath of the party’s 2024 electoral defeat, stressing that internal unity remains the most critical task facing the NPP as it seeks to return to power.
He noted that as a former aspirant in the party’s presidential primary, he understood the disappointment that follows a contested election, but emphasised that personal grievances must not override the collective interest of the party.
Dr. Acheampong cautioned against recent tensions within the party, particularly remarks attributed to former flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong, urging all factions to lower political temperatures and focus on reconciliation and rebuilding.
He acknowledged concerns raised over exchanges during and after the primary, including insults directed at Mr. Agyapong, but stressed that such actions should not be attributed to Dr. Bawumia or the party leadership.
According to him, while emotions ran high during the contest and harsh words were exchanged on all sides, it is now necessary for all actors to exercise restraint and embrace reconciliation without conditions.
Dr. Acheampong further urged Kennedy Agyapong and his supporters, as well as his own camp, to set aside differences and unite behind the party’s flagbearer, describing Dr. Bawumia as the candidate of the entire NPP, not just a faction.
He concluded that unity within the party is essential to its electoral fortunes, stating that only a cohesive front would enable the NPP to secure victory in 2028.
“Unity is not weakness. Unity is how we win,” he stated.
