Government has registered 4,347 earth-moving and mining equipment at the Tema Port and installed tracking devices on 1,864 of them as part of efforts to tighten oversight of the mining sector and intensify the fight against illegal mining.
Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah disclosed this at the Government Accountability Series held at the Presidency on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
According to the Minister, the tracking initiative forms part of measures to improve monitoring of mining equipment and curb their use in illegal mining operations.
“To strengthen oversight of the small-scale mining sector, 4,347 earth-moving and mining equipment units were registered at the Tema Port, while 1,864 tracking devices were installed on these equipment,” he said.
Mr. Buah further revealed that the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat carried out 200 anti-galamsey operations across six regions between January and June 2026, resulting in the arrest of 207 suspects, including 46 foreign nationals.
The operations also led to the seizure of 78 excavators and the destruction of 2,800 chanfang machines operating on river bodies in illegal mining hotspots across the country.
