A staff member of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), Aliu Mahama, has accused police officers from the Nungua Police Station of assaulting him after allegedly mistaking him for an armed robber at GREDA Estate in Accra.

Mahama, who works with the company’s Transport Unit, said he was attacked around 10 p.m. on Monday, July 13, 2026, while returning from buying kenkey for his children.

He alleged that a group of men in a white unmarked Toyota pickup stopped him, ordered him to lie down and accused him of being a criminal. According to him, he was beaten before being handcuffed and taken away.

“They told me I was an armed robber and asked me to raise my hands. They said if I did not cooperate, they would shoot me.”

Mahama said he was taken to the Nungua Police Station after being held in the vehicle for several hours. He claimed he was assaulted again when he tried to explain that he was not involved in any crime.

He later reported the incident and said he was able to identify some of the officers he believed were involved. The officers, however, reportedly denied assaulting him when questioned.

Medical examinations conducted by GCGL Resident Medical Officer, Dr Jacqui Barnes, showed that Mahama suffered injuries including swelling around both eyes, bleeding in the eyes, bruises on both thighs, and a small swelling on his scalp.

Dr Barnes said the injuries were consistent with the complaints reported by Mahama and indicated that he would receive medication and be monitored.

The police have not publicly commented on the allegations, while investigations into the incident continue.
