Two hundred and seventy-eight small-scale mining licenses have been terminated by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for various regulatory breaches and expired permits.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 23, the Ministry explained that the action forms part of government’s renewed commitment to sanitize and strengthen governance within Ghana’s small-scale mining sector.
According to the statement, the decision was taken in line with the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) and the Minerals and Mining (General) Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2173).
The Ministry noted that the affected companies had either violated key operational guidelines or failed to renew their licenses upon expiry, rendering their operations illegal.
The Ministry emphasized that regulations governing the mining sector are designed not to stifle progress but to ensure the protection of natural resources, the environment, and the wellbeing of host communities.
It warned that non-compliance erodes public trust and undermines the integrity of Ghana’s mineral governance system.
It further urged both current and prospective miners to familiarize themselves with the proper procedures for obtaining and renewing mineral rights, stressing that adherence to the law is the foundation for sustainable mining practices.
The statement reaffirmed government’s determination to promote responsible mining and maintain accountability in the management of Ghana’s mineral resources.
