All unlicensed mortuaries and funeral facilities across the country have been given one week to regularize their operations or risk being shut down.
This was announced by the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) in a statement dated October 22, 2025.
The Agency warned that operating without a valid license is a breach of Section 55 of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829), which makes it an offence punishable by fines or closure of the facility.
According to MoFFA, several mortuaries and funeral homes continue to operate illegally despite repeated reminders to obtain the necessary licenses. The Agency emphasized that the one-week grace period is the final opportunity for such operators to comply.
“The Agency has observed that a number of Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities continue to operate without license which is contrary to section 55 of Act 829,” the statement read.
“All operators of Facilities and Practitioners are by this notice advised to take steps to regularize their operations or risk closure of their facilities.”
MoFFA, which operates under Part Two of Act 829, is mandated to license, control, and regulate all facilities connected with the storage, transportation, and disposal of human remains.
The Agency urged both private and public facility operators to visit its offices at the former Ministry of Health main building in Accra or contact them through the numbers provided for guidance on the regularization process.
