The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, has called for urgent measures to strengthen anaesthesia services in the country, citing a critical shortage of physician anaesthesiologists.
Speaking at the 30th Anniversary celebration of the Ghana Anaesthesiologists Society (GAS), Dr. Akoriyea acknowledged the significant role anaesthesiologists play in the delivery of safe surgical and emergency care and stressed the need for increased investment in specialist training and capacity building.
He commended the Ghana Anaesthesiologists Society for its contributions to improving healthcare delivery over the past three decades, particularly in advancing anaesthesia practice and promoting patient safety across the country.
According to the Director-General, addressing the shortage of specialist anaesthesiologists is essential to expanding access to quality surgical services and improving health outcomes nationwide.
Dr. Akoriyea further outlined the Ghana Health Service’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at increasing the number of trained professionals, enhancing specialist education, and strengthening anaesthesia services at health facilities across the country.
