An Accra High Court has allegedly ordered the extradition of Ghanaian businessman Fredrick Kumi, popularly known as “Abu Trica,” to the United States to face charges over his alleged involvement in an $8 million romance scam.
His lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, confirmed the court’s decision in an X post on Thursday, July 2, and indicated that the legal team is considering an appeal to the Supreme Court.
“I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast tracked and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 – Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court,” he wrote.
The ruling is the latest development in a case that has drawn widespread attention since Kumi’s arrest in December 2025 following an extradition request by the United States government.
United States authorities are seeking Kumi over allegations that he was part of a transnational criminal network that allegedly orchestrated a romance scam which defrauded victims of approximately $8 million. Investigators allege the group used fake online identities to build relationships with victims before persuading them to transfer money under false pretences.
Following his arrest, the Office of the Attorney-General initiated extradition proceedings in Ghana based on a request from the US government.
Earlier this year, the High Court granted Kumi bail in the sum of GH¢30 million with two justified sureties after he had spent several months in custody pending the determination of the extradition proceedings.
