The Ministry of Energy has dismissed calls by the Minority in Parliament for the resignation of Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor, describing the demands as politically driven and unwarranted.
The Minority had earlier argued that recent power outages reflect poor leadership and justify a change at the Ministry. However, government insists the situation does not warrant such action.
Responding to the claims, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, said the Minister’s performance should be assessed based on broader sector outcomes, including what he described as a sustained period of stable power supply and ongoing financial reforms.
“For somebody who has kept the lights on…12 months of no load shedding, is he somebody you describe as a failure?” he said.
Rockson added that significant debt payments and renewed confidence from utility providers demonstrate progress rather than failure.
“For somebody who has kept paying debt…is that the person you describe as such?” he questioned.
The Ministry maintains that recent disruptions are being addressed and do not undermine overall gains made in stabilising Ghana’s energy sector.
