GENT+ Network raises alarm over reported ARV shortages

GENT+ Network has raised concerns about reported shortages of antiretroviral (ARV) medicines at several health facilities across Ghana, warning that the situation could disrupt treatment for people living with HIV.

In a statement dated Tuesday August 11, 2026, the organisation said information gathered from community volunteers working in HIV treatment centres points to difficulties in accessing medicines at some facilities.

According to the group, some patients have reportedly returned expired ARVs and received replacements with expiry dates as early as October 2026. Others, it said, have allegedly been asked to return the following month because medicines were unavailable.

GENT+ Network said the reports have created anxiety among patients and raised concerns about continuity of treatment.

The organisation stressed that ARVs are essential to maintaining viral suppression and supporting the Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) principle, under which people with sustained undetectable HIV levels do not sexually transmit the virus.

The group is also seeking clarification over reports that consignments of ARVs procured by the Global Fund and donated to Ghana may still be at the Tema Harbour awaiting clearance and distribution.

GENT+ Network said it had not independently verified the reports about the consignments but believes the accounts from multiple community sources warrant an immediate response from the authorities.

It is therefore calling on the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, National AIDS/STI Control Programme, Ghana AIDS Commission, Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanism and relevant port and supply-chain authorities to provide an update on the national stock situation.

The organisation also wants authorities to establish whether there are delays in clearing or distributing medicines and ensure that patients do not leave health facilities without their prescribed ARVs.

It further called for emergency measures in affected facilities and better communication with health workers, community volunteers and people living with HIV to prevent panic and misinformation.

GENT+ Network said any disruption to access could undermine Ghana’s progress in its HIV response and urged the authorities to address the reported shortages with “the utmost urgency, transparency, and accountability.”
