The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has taken a swipe at the New Patriotic Party (NPP), insisting the party lacks the moral authority to comment on LGBTQ+ issues.
Speaking on Ekosiisen on Asempa FM, he directly criticised NPP MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, who led a recent press conference on the matter, accusing him of peddling falsehoods.
According to Baidoo, the NPP’s public posture on the issue is inconsistent and lacks credibility, especially in light of its past handling of related matters.
“NPP has no credibility to speak on LGBTQ issues; they should be the last people to even attempt to comment on such a subject,” he stated, describing the party’s stance as politically driven propaganda.
His comments come on the back of the NPP’s press conference following remarks by President John Dramani Mahama, where the opposition raised questions about the handling of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
Baidoo defended the President’s position, stressing that Mahama has made his stance clear and would assent to the bill if it is passed and presented to him.
He also took aim at Ntim Fordjour, accusing him of spreading misinformation and misrepresenting facts about the legislative process.
“The President has said if the bill comes to him, he will sign it. He won’t do what Akufo-Addo did,” Baidoo noted, adding that the executive does not interfere with Parliament’s work.
The Akwatia MP maintained that Parliament, not the executive, is responsible for completing the legislative process, and urged sponsors of the bill to expedite their work.
