Secreatary -Genral of Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has urged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to intensify its grassroots mobilisation and avoid complacency as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Ahotor FM, Mr Koomson said no political party could depend solely on the advantage of being in government to secure victory at the polls.
He stressed that maintaining close ties with party supporters and building strong grassroots structures were critical to winning elections.
According to him, political parties must engage consistently with their supporters and not assume that government performance alone would translate into electoral success.
Mr Koomson also criticised what he described as the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration’s approach to the management of state assets, citing the controversy surrounding the Achimota Forest as an example.
He argued that public assets belong to all Ghanaians and should be managed in the national interest rather than treated as private property.
“State resources belong to the people of Ghana and must be protected for the benefit of everyone,” he emphasised.
The veteran labour leader further advised the NDC to prioritise direct engagement with supporters at the grassroots instead of relying primarily on government officials and political officeholders to sustain the party’s popularity.
Drawing from his experience in organised labour, Mr Koomson said he regularly visited workers in their homes, including on weekends, to maintain close contact with them.
He noted that the approach helped him build trust with members and contributed to his success in every election he contested during his 12 years in leadership.
Mr Koomson also expressed concern that some political appointees appeared to be focusing more on their personal political ambitions ahead of the 2028 elections than on strengthening the party’s grassroots support.
He warned that even well-performing governments and popular policies would not automatically guarantee electoral victory if a political party failed to maintain vibrant grassroots structures and sustained engagement with its supporters.
