The Chairman of Parliament’s Education Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the Governing Council of Bolgatanga Technical University, describing its recent actions as unlawful and procedurally improper.
His call follows the Council Chairman’s decision to remove the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel Alnaa, over alleged procurement irregularities.
Although the Vice-Chancellor is facing accusations of procurement-related misconduct, Mr. Nortsu-Kotoe argued that due process required the Governing Council to investigate the allegations and forward its findings to the Minister for Education for appropriate action.
Instead, he said, the Council Chairman went ahead to dismiss the Vice-Chancellor, demote two directors, suspend several lecturers, and issue warning letters to other staff members.
Mr. Nortsu-Kotoe contended that these actions contravene the university’s governing statutes and threaten academic independence and due process within the institution.
He is therefore urging the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to intervene by reinstating Professor Alnaa and initiating a fresh, independent investigation into the allegations to ensure fairness and compliance with established procedures.
