The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has intensified fire safety education and inspections across the Eastern Region as part of efforts to prevent fire outbreaks and improve emergency preparedness.
The campaign, which covered Akropong, Asamankese and Suhum, targeted households, businesses, public institutions and other facilities, with firefighters educating residents on common fire risks and measures to prevent emergencies.
In Akropong, the Fire Service carried out door-to-door and street sensitisation ahead of the Akuapem Ridge Odwira and Ohum festivities. Residents were cautioned against electrical faults, unsafe LPG handling, unattended cooking and indiscriminate burning.
Firefighters also demonstrated the proper use of fire extinguishers and urged residents to report fire incidents promptly to minimise damage and protect lives and property.
At Asamankese, a four-day fire safety education exercise reached health facilities, religious institutions, professional associations and other public and private establishments.
The exercise focused on identifying fire hazards and equipping institutions and individuals with practical knowledge to respond effectively to emergencies.
Meanwhile, in New Life in the Suhum Municipality, the Fire Command combined public education with inspections of shops and households.
Particular attention was paid to LPG safety, electrical hazards, combustible materials, evacuation procedures and risks associated with welding and fitting operations.
Firefighters also warned against sparks, fuel and oil exposure, overloaded sockets, poor housekeeping and blocked exits, all of which could increase the risk of fire and hamper evacuation during an emergency.
