Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced a major restructuring of his personal office, appointing veteran politician and former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, as Chief of Staff.
The appointment is widely seen as a significant step in efforts to reorganize and strengthen Dr. Bawumia’s political operations as the NPP seeks to rebuild following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
As Chief of Staff, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu will coordinate all operational activities within Dr. Bawumia’s office, placing him at the center of strategic planning and organizational management.
A former Member of Parliament for Suame, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu brings nearly three decades of parliamentary experience to the role. During his political career, he served as Majority Leader, Minority Leader, and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, earning a reputation as one of the NPP’s most experienced and influential figures.
Beyond Ghana’s borders, he has also held prominent international positions, including serving as Vice Chairman of the Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption and Deputy Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
Political observers view the appointment as a signal of Dr. Bawumia’s intention to establish a structured and disciplined command system as he prepares for future political engagements.
The move is also expected to strengthen coordination within his team and leverage Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s extensive network across the party.
In addition to the Chief of Staff appointment, Dr. Bawumia announced several key appointments to his office.
Former Member of Parliament, Opare Ansah, has been named Director in Charge of Identifiable Activities, while former National Chairman of the NPP, Peter Mac Manu, will serve as Director in Charge of Political Strategy.
