The Chief Executive Officer of the Special Group of Companies, Ernest Ofori Sarpong, has been appointed as the first Chancellor of the University of Media, Arts and Communications (UniMAC).
The appointment, approved by the University’s Governing Council at its meeting on May 26, 2026, is scheduled to take effect from August 1, 2026, in line with the institution’s statutes.
In announcing the appointment, UniMAC described Mr. Ofori Sarpong as a distinguished Ghanaian entrepreneur and business leader whose contributions span manufacturing, real estate, finance, construction and media.
The University noted that his commitment to education, youth empowerment and national development were among the key factors that informed the decision to appoint him as the institution’s ceremonial head.
As Chancellor, Mr. Ofori Sarpong will provide strategic leadership, promote UniMAC’s vision, strengthen partnerships with industry and society, and preside over the conferment of degrees and other academic honours on behalf of the University.
The Governing Council expressed confidence that his extensive experience, leadership qualities and dedication to excellence will contribute significantly to the growth and development of the University.
Mr. Ofori Sarpong is the founder and CEO of the Special Group of Companies, a diversified business group with interests in manufacturing, real estate, construction and strategic investments.
He is also associated with several major Ghanaian enterprises, including United Television (UTV), Best Point Savings and Loans Limited and U2 Salt Limited.
A Chartered Accountant by profession, he holds a Master of Science degree in Finance and Investment Management from the University of Salford and is pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration at École Supérieure de Gestion (ESG).
He has also received an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Law from Barkley University in recognition of his contributions to Ghana’s socio-economic development.
Over the years, Mr. Ofori Sarpong has received several awards for his achievements in entrepreneurship and business leadership, including the Millennium Excellence Award for Business Entrepreneur of the Year (2025), CEO of the Year – Consumer Drinks at the Ghana CEO Summit (2025), and other recognitions for his contributions to the manufacturing sector.
Beyond business, he has served on several boards and advisory bodies, including as Board Chairman of the Governing Council of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), Chairman of the EMY Africa Awards, Chairperson of the Advisory Board of the Millennium Excellence Foundation, and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana.
He previously served on the National COVID-19 Trust Fund and currently serves as the Global President of the PRESEC Old Boys Association (PRESEC-ODADEƐ)
