A group calling itself the Grassroots Alliance for Victory 2028, Ashanti Region Branch, has called for the immediate resignation of the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, accusing him of leadership failure and neglect of the party’s grassroots base.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, July 16, 2026, the group said recent events surrounding the party’s constituency executive elections had exposed serious weaknesses in the party’s leadership and internal management.
According to the group, directives issued by the General Secretary ahead of the elections, including a decision not to provide transportation, food, drinks or other support for delegates, amounted to disrespect for the party’s grassroots members who form the backbone of the NPP.
The group argued that delegates, many of whom travel long distances and use personal resources to participate in party activities, deserved better treatment from the national leadership.
The Alliance also blamed the General Secretary for incidents of violence and confusion that characterised some of the constituency executive elections across the country over the weekend.
It cited reports of confrontations, invasions of polling centres and arrests, including disturbances recorded during the Afigya Sekyere East constituency elections, as evidence of poor planning and inadequate logistical arrangements.
According to the group, the incidents reflected a failure of leadership and raised concerns about the party’s preparedness for future electoral contests.
The group further pointed to the NPP’s performance in the 2024 parliamentary elections, where the party’s representation in Parliament reportedly fell from 137 seats to 88 seats, describing it as the party’s worst electoral performance under the Fourth Republic.
It argued that the decline occurred under the leadership of Mr Kodua as General Secretary and questioned his ability to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
The Alliance also raised concerns about the party’s finances, questioning claims of financial difficulties while recalling previous instances where the General Secretary reportedly financed nomination fees for aspirants during earlier internal elections.
The group said the apparent contradiction warranted greater transparency and accountability regarding the party’s finances and election-related expenditures.
Consequently, the Grassroots Alliance for Victory 2028 demanded the immediate resignation of Mr Kodua and called on the National Council of the NPP to intervene.
Among its proposals were the provision of logistical support for delegates in the remaining constituency elections, an independent audit into party finances and election logistics, and reforms aimed at strengthening grassroots participation in party decision-making.
The group maintained that the NPP belongs to its grassroots members and urged the leadership to place the interests of polling station executives, electoral area coordinators and delegates at the centre of the party’s activities.
