Ghana Maritime Authority Deputy D-G demands retraction over Spintex land dispute publication

The Deputy Director- General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Mubarick Masawudu, has demanded the immediate retraction and apology over a publication linking him to allegations concerning a land dispute at Spintex in the Greater Accra Region.

In a letter issued through his lawyers, Limo@Law, Mr Masawudu denied any involvement in the land dispute or the alleged use of land guards referenced in a September 10, 2026 publication titled “Ghana Maritime Authority Official Named In Allegations Over Spintex Land Dispute.”

The lawyers said the publication falsely associated their client with violent and unlawful conduct and created the impression that he was involved in the use of land guards in connection with the dispute.

According to the letter, Mr Masawudu is neither a party to nor connected to the land dispute or any of the persons involved in it.

He also denied instructing, engaging, facilitating, funding or participating directly or indirectly in any land guard activities related to the dispute.

The lawyers argued that the publication had exposed their client to “public opprobrium, ridicule and hostility” and placed his reputation and integrity at risk.

They further accused media of failing to undertake the necessary enquiries and verification before publishing the allegations, describing this as a departure from established journalistic standards.

The legal team has given media seven days from receipt of the letter to retract the publication insofar as it identifies or refers to Mr Masawudu.

They are also demanding that the retraction be published with the same prominence as the original report, including on the front page of the next available edition of the newspaper and with equivalent prominence on the digital platform where the story appeared.

The lawyers further want the offending publication removed from the media’s digital platforms and for the media organisation to publish an unqualified apology acknowledging that the publication wrongly associated Mr Masawudu with the alleged use of land guards.

They insisted that the correction should clearly state that their client has no involvement or connection with the land dispute or the alleged land guard activities.

The lawyers warned that failure to comply within the seven-day period would result in Mr Masawudu pursuing “all appropriate legal remedies” available to him, including proceedings to protect his reputation.

The letter, signed by Managing Solicitor Limann A. Mohammed of Limo@Law, said the demands did not constitute a full statement of Mr Masawudu’s case and that all his legal rights and remedies were expressly reserved
