The Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon, Naa Odoley Sowah, has disclosed that a committee will be constituted by early next week to determine appropriate compensation for businesses and property owners affected by the recent demolition at La Pleasure Beach in Accra.
The committee will include representatives from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), the La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA), traditional authorities, management of the affected beach facilities and the MP.
Speaking when she appeared before Parliament’s Committee on Local Government and Decentralisation on Tuesday, October 6, Mrs Sowah said authorities had already collected data on persons affected by the exercise.
She said the information would be used to assess their circumstances and determine whether they should receive financial compensation or support for relocation.
“We have gotten their data and the committee is going to look at what we are going to give to them as compensation,” she said.
Mrs. Sowah explained that the exact nature and amount of compensation had not yet been determined, as the matter would first be considered by the committee.
“The matter will be discussed by the committee before a decision will be reached,” she added.
The development follows a recent demolition exercise at La Pleasure Beach, where military personnel cleared structures and facilities in the area.
The exercise affected businesses and other property owners, prompting concerns over displaced livelihoods and calls for the authorities to address the plight of those affected.
Mrs. Sowah also clarified that the La Pleasure Beach demolition was separate from a similar exercise at Laboma Beach.
