The Black Stars were met by a disappointing turnout at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday as large sections of the stands remained empty during Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia.
The sparse attendance created a subdued atmosphere around the Group C encounter, with significant portions of the stadium still unoccupied 25 minutes into the match.
Ghana went into the game seeking a response after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening qualifier.
However, the Black Stars were unable to secure their first points of the campaign, losing 4-2 to The Gambia on home soil.
The low turnout came a day after head coach Carlos Queiroz urged supporters to focus on backing the players available for the match rather than dwelling on the absence of key members of the squad.
“It’s better to stay home if you’re coming to the stadium to complain about players that are not here instead of supporting those that are here,” Queiroz said ahead of the game.
Ghana were without several key players, including Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo and Nathaniel Adjei, while Alexander Djiku was ruled out after suffering an injury in the defeat to Côte d’Ivoire.
Queiroz had hoped the home crowd would provide the Black Stars with the support needed to respond to their opening defeat.
Instead, the sparse attendance contributed to a subdued setting as Ghana struggled to turn home advantage into a positive result.
The defeat leaves the Black Stars still searching for their first points in the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign after two matches.
