President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed speculation about seeking a third presidential term, insisting that his priority is to fulfil the mandate entrusted to him by Ghanaians and deliver on the promises made during the 2024 election campaign.
Speaking during his Resetting Ghana Tour of the Volta Region on July 17, President Mahama said his administration remains focused on implementing policies and programmes that will improve the lives of Ghanaians within the constitutional term of office.
“The people of Ghana gave me a mandate for one term, and I am working hard to meet the promises I made to them,” he said.
The President disclosed that he regularly reminds members of his Cabinet that their time in office is limited and should be used effectively to deliver meaningful results for the country.
“I always tell my ministers, let’s number our days so that we can work harder to meet the promises we made to the Ghanaian people,” he stated.
President Mahama’s remarks come amid renewed public speculation over the possibility of him seeking a third term in office.
Addressing the constitutional debate, he maintained that the relevant provisions of the 1992 Constitution are clear but acknowledged that any citizen has the right to seek judicial interpretation if they deem it necessary.
“I’ve read it over several times. It’s exactly what it says. But if they want to ask the Supreme Court, that is their business,” he said.
Reaffirming his commitment to the mandate given to him by the electorate, President Mahama stressed that he intends to use his time in office to honour the trust reposed in him by the Ghanaian people.
“I know that the people of Ghana gave me one additional term, and I’m going to work to meet the trust that they put in me,” he added.
