The government has increased the daily feeding grant for students with special needs from GH¢8.00 to GH¢15.00 with immediate effect as part of efforts to improve support for learners in special schools across the country.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during proceedings in Parliament on Thursday, July 2.
The revised feeding rate is expected to enhance the nutritional needs of students in special schools and ease the financial burden on institutions catering for learners with disabilities.
As part of broader measures to strengthen special needs education, the Minister also directed the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to allocate GH¢100 million annually to support Special Needs Education beginning in 2027.
Beyond special education, Mr. Iddrisu announced new incentives aimed at improving teacher welfare, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
He disclosed that the government plans to introduce a 20 per cent rural posting allowance for teachers who accept postings to deprived areas to help address staffing shortages in such communities.
The Minister further announced that the qualifying period for study leave with pay for teachers serving in rural and deprived areas has been reduced from three years to two years.
According to him, teachers who voluntarily accept postings to these communities will now be eligible to apply for study leave with pay after completing two years of service.
