The Gomoa East District Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), supported by a joint security task force, has begun demolishing illegal structures built on waterways and restricted areas at Kofi Anna City and Kakraba Down in the Central Region.
The exercise follows recent flooding that displaced hundreds of residents and destroyed property worth thousands of Ghana cedis.
Gomoa East District NADMO Director, Hassan Hamidu, said the operation is aimed at preventing future floods, restoring drainage channels, and enforcing planning regulations.
He blamed the recurring flooding on illegal construction on waterways, wetlands, and poor waste disposal that blocks drains during heavy rains.
He urged residents to obtain building permits before constructing and warned that authorities would continue removing unauthorized structures to protect lives and property.
Some flood victims, who lost their belongings in the disaster, appealed for government and humanitarian support to help them recover.
They also welcomed the demolition exercise, saying the illegal structures had long contributed to persistent flooding in the affected communities.
