The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Gilbert Kenneth Adjei, has assured Parliament that the desilting and dredging of the Odaw River remains on schedule and is expected to be completed by December 2027.
Providing an update on the floor of Parliament, the Minister said work on the flood control project is progressing steadily, with significant efforts underway to improve the river’s capacity and reduce the perennial flooding experienced in parts of the Greater Accra Region.
Mr. Adjei explained that the project forms part of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, a government initiative aimed at strengthening drainage infrastructure, mitigating flood risks, and enhancing climate resilience in flood-prone communities across the capital.
He disclosed that construction works commenced in February 2024, with funding secured through the GARID project to support the implementation of the river improvement programme.
According to the Minister, the intervention is expected to significantly improve stormwater management, protect lives and property from flooding, and contribute to the long-term environmental sustainability of the Greater Accra Region.
