The Adentan Circuit Court has adjourned proceedings in the case involving nine individuals accused in connection with the recent shooting incident that left former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, injured.
The case has been rescheduled to September 23 after the court granted bail to all nine accused persons.
Each defendant was granted bail in the sum of GHS500,000 with two sureties.
The court ruled that while the sureties are not required to be justified, they must complete all necessary bail documentation.
Speaking to reporters after proceedings on Tuesday, June 23, legal counsel for the Kristo Asafo Mission, Nana Kofi Safo Kantanka, disclosed that the accused persons are facing two principal charges: unlawful possession of weapons and participation in prohibited vigilante activities.
According to him, all nine defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The accused persons are Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, Jehosaphat Tamaklo Safo, Kwabena Safo, Benjamin Amoakwa Sam, Enock Badu, Richard Ayitey, Gideon Safo, Nana Kwaku Afriyie, and Kwadwo Safo Koomsom. Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena is reported to be a relative of the injured former legislator, while several of the accused are said to have served as personal bodyguards to one of the factions involved in the dispute.
Prosecutors allege that the shooting incident occurred during events connected to a disputed installation process within the Kristo Asafo Mission.
The violence is believed to have stemmed from a protracted leadership conflict that emerged following the death of the founder of the religious organisation, Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.
The incident resulted in injuries to Sarah Adwoa Safo and has drawn significant public attention due to its connection to the ongoing succession dispute within the mission.
The Adentan Circuit Court is expected to resume hearing the case on September 23 as investigations and legal proceedings continue.
