GFL Secretary-General backs prosecution of offensive comments

The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called on the Ghana Police Service to continue arresting and prosecuting individuals suspected of making insulting or offensive comments against government officials and public figures.

Mr Koomson argued that abandoning such arrests could create tension and undermine the peace and stability of the country.

Speaking on Ahotor FM, he said individuals suspected of committing offences should be taken before the courts rather than having police investigations discontinued.

“Take them to court and let them defend themselves. The court should have the final say.”

According to him, allowing inflammatory comments to go unchecked could trigger retaliatory actions by supporters of affected individuals and potentially create a cycle of confrontation. ‘Don’t describe every arrest as political’

Mr Koomson also rejected claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that recent arrests linked to allegedly offensive remarks are politically motivated.

He accused the previous NPP administration of engaging in similar practices, alleging that some individuals were arrested following what he described as fabricated stories or allegations.

He cited Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Assin Central MP James Gyakye Quayson, XYZ Broadcasting’s Oheneba Boamah and Accra FM’s Bobie Ansah as examples of people who, he claimed, experienced similar treatment under the previous administration.

He therefore urged the NPP to avoid labelling every arrest made under the current government as political persecution.
