New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has attributed the party’s 2024 electoral defeat to voter apathy within its own ranks rather than the strength of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Addressing party faithful at the launch of his *“Our Journey Together”* campaign in the Sene East Constituency on Wednesday, October 15, Dr. Bawumia disclosed that millions of NPP supporters who voted in 2020 failed to show up at the polls in 2024 — a lapse he said cost the party dearly.
He explained that while the NDC won by a margin of 1.7 million votes, the NPP’s missing 2.1 million votes could have easily swung the outcome in their favour.
“About 2.1 million people who voted for us in 2020 did not vote in 2024. These were NPP members — we simply didn’t vote,” he stated.
“John Mahama secured victory with 1.7 million votes. If our 2.1 million members had turned out, we would have won. That is why I said it wasn’t the NDC that won the election — it was the NPP that lost it,” Dr. Bawumia said.
The former Vice President underscored the importance of rebuilding internal unity and energizing the grassroots as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
“So, I am confident that, by the grace of God, if we resolve our internal issues and go out to vote, we will win the next election,” he assured supporters.
