Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has reiterated his interest in becoming head coach of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, citing the quality of players available to the country.
The former Trinidad and Tobago international is among the names linked with the vacant position following the departure of Carlos Queiroz amid Ghana’s difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars lost their opening Group C matches against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia, leaving the team without a point and increasing pressure on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to find a substantive replacement.
Speaking to The Guardian, Yorke said Ghana’s footballing history and the talent within the squad made the coaching position attractive.
“It’s a job I’d be interested in, given Ghana’s history and the players available,” he said.
“You look at the squad and your eyes open even wider.”
The 54-year-old specifically highlighted the quality of players available to Ghana, including Premier League stars Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo.
Yorke also disclosed that an agent had contacted him regarding Ghana’s interest in appointing him as head coach, adding that the discussions eventually became public before he was fully aware of the situation.
“The conversation started there and then reached the media before I really knew it,” he said.
Beyond the quality of players, Yorke believes Ghana must establish the right team culture and secure commitment from the players to achieve success.
“The talent is there. Build the culture and get the players to buy in, and the football will follow,” he stated.
Yorke has coaching experience with Australian club Macarthur FC, whom he led to the Australia Cup title in 2022.
He also took charge of the Trinidad and Tobago national team in November 2024.
His renewed interest comes as the GFA and the Ministry of Sports continue efforts to identify a permanent successor to Queiroz.
In the meantime, an interim technical team has been appointed to oversee Ghana’s upcoming AFCON qualifying matches against Somalia.
Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren will lead the team, assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram. Former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has been named goalkeeper trainer.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Somalia in their next two Group C fixtures as Ghana seeks to revive its qualification campaign.
The GFA and the Sports Ministry are expected to appoint a substantive head coach in November, according to the information provided.
Ghana will also be seeking to avoid a repeat of its disappointing 2025 AFCON qualifying campaign, during which the team failed to win any of its matches and missed out on the tournament.
