England captain Harry Kane has been named the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner, becoming the first English player since Michael Owen in 2001 to claim football’s prestigious individual award.
The Bayern Munich striker was announced as the winner on Monday night, October 26, following an outstanding season in which his goals helped the German club secure a domestic league and cup double.
Kane also played a key role in England’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring six goals as the Three Lions reached the semi-finals.
The 33-year-old’s achievement ends a 25-year wait for an English winner of the men’s Ballon d’Or and places him among the country’s most celebrated footballers.
He becomes the fifth Englishman to receive the honour, joining Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Owen.
Kane’s success was built on an exceptional scoring record, with the striker reportedly netting 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions for Bayern Munich during the season.
His performances were central to Bayern’s domestic double, while his contribution to England’s World Cup campaign further strengthened his credentials for the award.
Kane prevailed in a field that included leading football stars such as France captain Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal.
The award also represents a significant individual milestone for Bayern Munich, recognising Kane’s impact since joining the club.
Kane’s Ballon d’Or triumph marks a major moment in a career characterised by prolific goalscoring and sustained performances at the highest level.
He established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading strikers during his time at Tottenham Hotspur before moving to Bayern Munich in 2023 in search of major honours.
His scoring consistency continued in Germany, where his finishing, link-up play and influence in attack became central to Bayern’s ambitions.
The 2026 award recognises his individual performances and adds another distinction to a career in which he has also become one of England’s most prominent modern forwards.
Kane’s victory carries significance for English football, ending the country’s long wait for another men’s Ballon d’Or winner since Owen’s triumph in 2001.
While Owen’s award followed his performances for Liverpool and England, Kane’s recognition comes after a season marked by domestic silverware with Bayern Munich and a strong international campaign.
For the England captain, the Ballon d’Or represents a defining personal achievement, recognising his goalscoring output, leadership and contribution to success at club and international levels.
