Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has expressed his condolences to the family of the late Dagbon Overlord, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, following news of his passing.
In a Facebook post, Dr. Forson extended sympathies to the Gbewaa Royal Family and the people of Dagbon, describing the death of the revered traditional ruler as an immense loss.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to His Royal Majesty’s family, the Gbewaa Royal Family, and the good people of Dagbon on the passing of His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II,” he wrote.
“May the Almighty grant him eternal rest and give the Gbewaa Royal Family and the people of Dagbon the strength and comfort to bear this irreparable loss.”
Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II ascended the Dagbon throne in January 2019 following a historic peace agreement that ended the long-running Dagbon chieftaincy conflict between the Abudu and Andani royal gates.
Widely regarded as a symbol of reconciliation, his reign was marked by peace, stability and the revival of traditional institutions in Dagbon, earning him admiration across Ghana.
His passing is expected to trigger traditional mourning rites across the kingdom as tributes continue to pour in from political leaders, traditional authorities and members of the public.
Government has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, describing him as a unifying figure whose reign helped restore peace and stability to the kingdom after years of conflict.
Meanwhile, Ghana Education Service also announced the closure of all schools in Yendi for three days to allow students, teachers and residents to participate in mourning activities and traditional rites in honour of the late Dagbon overlord.
