The University of Ghana, Legon, has strongly denied reports suggesting that Malik Basintale, the Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), did not graduate from the institution.
In an official statement issued on June 2, 2025, the university described the allegations as false and urged the public to disregard them entirely.
The controversy was sparked by a letter circulating on social media, allegedly signed by the University’s Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, and addressed to the Secretary of the Civil Service Council.
The letter, dated May 27, 2025, appeared to respond to a request for verification of Basintale’s degree and claimed he had not graduated.
However, the University’s Public Affairs Directorate, in a statement signed by Dr. Elizier Taiba Ameyaw-Buronyah, discredited the document, labeling it a complete forgery.
“It has come to the attention of the University of Ghana that a letter purportedly signed by the Registrar, Mrs Emelia Agyei-Mensah and addressed to the Secretary of the Civil Service Council, with the title: ‘RE: Request for Verification of Degree – Malik Basintale, dated May 27, 2025, is being circulated on social media. The said letter is a forgery and neither the registrar nor any other officer of the University has received it, processed or responded to any such request,” the statement clarified.
The University emphasized that the claims being made about Mr. Basintale’s academic records are unfounded and should not be taken seriously.
It further warned against the spread of such misinformation, especially as scrutiny of public officials’ academic qualifications continues to grow.
