Gomoa Central Member of Parliament Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, narrowly escaped an attack by angry residents of New Winneba following a violent clash in the community that left three people dead and about 15 others injured.

The MP had visited the Effutu North District Police Command to obtain firsthand information about the incident when residents who had gathered at the facility confronted him.

Security personnel quickly intervened and escorted Mr Asare Obeng away from the area to prevent the situation from escalating.
The Central Regional Police Command and other security officers were subsequently deployed to protect the MP and restore calm.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the violence erupted at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when about 300 people from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze allegedly stormed New Winneba.

The police said the group was armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks and attacked residents, while shops, stores and residential properties belonging to natives were also damaged.

About 15 injured persons, including a police officer, were reportedly sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.
Three people have since been confirmed dead.

The clashes are believed to have been triggered by a land dispute involving communities within the Gomoa area, although the precise circumstances surrounding the violence and the deaths remain under investigation.

Police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to contain the situation.

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, also ordered additional reinforcement from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles, to strengthen security operations in the area.

The Ghana Police Service said the reinforcement was intended to beef up security and prevent further escalation, adding that the situation was under control.

Security personnel remain deployed in the affected communities to maintain peace and prevent further disturbances.

Meanwhile, the Central Regional Police Command has arrested seven suspects in connection with the attack.

The Deputy Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Inspector Isaac Entie, confirmed the arrests to the media and said investigations were ongoing to identify and arrest other persons believed to have been involved.

The police have assured that further details will be communicated as investigations continue.
