A lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Cosmos Asante, also known as Yaw Ampong, has reportedly been arrested for allegedly impersonating the Adumasahene and Mawerehene of Juaben in the Ashanti Region.
Dr. Asante was reportedly picked up by the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, on the KNUST campus and is currently in police custody.
According to reports circulating on social media, the lecturer is suspected of presenting himself as the occupant of the two traditional stools without completing the customary processes required for his installation.
The alleged conduct is said to contravene Section 63 of the Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759), which addresses the offence of acting or holding oneself out as a chief without lawful entitlement.
Although some members of the community are said to recognise Dr. Asante as a chief, reports indicate that the customary rites and procedures required to formalise his installation have not been completed.
The development comes amid a dispute over the legitimate occupant of the Adumasa stool in the Juaben Traditional Area.
The Juaben Traditional Council has previously rejected the purported enstoolment of Dr. Asante, maintaining that the process did not comply with the customary procedures governing the installation of a chief in the area.
The police have yet to issue an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the reported arrest or the specific allegations against the lecturer.
