Five inmates at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison in the Eastern Region have reportedly been transferred to another cell following an alleged plot to poison former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The development was disclosed by his spokesperson, Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, who said the alleged plot had been brought to the attention of prison authorities and was under investigation.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem programme on Wednesday, October 28, Dr Boakye-Danquah said Mr Wontumi informed him about the alleged threat during a conversation following his court appearance on Tuesday.
According to the spokesperson, the matter came to light after an inmate reportedly overheard a conversation in which the five inmates were allegedly discussing plans to poison Mr Wontumi.
Dr Boakye-Danquah said he contacted the officer in charge of the prison, who reportedly confirmed that the matter was being investigated and that a committee had been established to establish the facts.
He added that the five inmates had since been moved to a different cell while investigations continued.
Their identities have not been disclosed.
Despite the alleged threat, Dr Boakye-Danquah said Mr Wontumi remained calm and was not frightened by the development.
He also indicated that he was following up on the politician’s welfare and planned to visit him at the prison.
